Dear Dollar Tree,
I don’t know if Dollar Tree’s company will read my reddit post, but I want to add this to my digital journal, hence Substack and other writing platforms I’ll use in the future, and ones that I have used in my past.
[For months, I have constantly been asked to stay for extra shifts or stay for a couple more hours because people don’t want to show up or they show up late. I am tired of mentally and physically preparing to work for my scheduled amount of hours only to find out that I should do more because the managers suffer to find someone to cover, and recently, when I was told that I could stay for an extra 30 minutes to an hour by the store manager, an assistant manager wasn’t told of any changes to my schedule, so another cashier came when they were scheduled to be shifted on time, and I was mad because I regret being too tired to ask for it in writing because I forget that I can’t trust people when I want to give the benefit of the doubt. I would appreciate it if my managers and myself didn’t have to deal with people who don’t want to show up to their shifts. As someone who consistently shows up to my shifts as early as possible, especially on the days where my body hates me but doesn’t make me bedridden, I would appreciate it if I could be able to change my Part Time to a Full Time.
I understand if these people have second jobs or school, or they’re lying about it for their personal self-care, but I don’t think they value their work ethic that much to actually show up and do the work that they were scheduled for, and it makes me spiritually tired that I show up early because I care, and if they have a multiple jobs or school they can communicate with the manager. I do not understand how the job market is horrible for people who want to work, yet we have employees who don’t want to show up to work. If I can’t get a Full-Time position, I hope they hire someone who can show up and there are many people on the internet who ask for a job every day.
Aside from people not showing up or consistently being late, I want a Full-Time position because 10 minutes is not enough time for a break. I can’t walk to the noodle aisle, grab the ramen, wait in line, wait for the manager to put my numbers in the system, buy the ramen, walk to the breakroom, microwave the ramen, and eat the entire bowl of ramen in 10 minutes. The ramen is just a theory but in reality I had a bad case of IBS without warning, and I still worked those hours, and I was told off by a manager who told me that they understood that adults have their moments, but I needed to clean up after myself, and the thing is I would have if I wasn’t rushing to use the bathroom and attempt to make myself smell decent as possible. Every 10 minutes is a race like the building is on fire for a snack, a drink, or the bathroom. If I could I would rename it to, “10 additional stressful minutes disguised as a break”, like how people want to rename the company to “Dollar Tree PLUS”. Sometimes, I just sit under the register because I know that I don’t have enough time.]
